Tianjin University, referred to as Tianda, was formerly known as Beiyang University. It was founded on October 2, 1895, and is the first modern university in China. After the failure of the Sino-Japanese War, the school was founded in Tianjin by Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty under the tenet of "self-strengthening is based on cultivating talents and seeking talents is based on the establishment of schools."
