About Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University (XJTLU)

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is an international joint venture university founded by Xi’an Jiaotong University in China and the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. As an independent Sino-foreign cooperative university, it captures the essence of both prestigious parent universities and is the first and only one of its kind approved by the Ministry of Education in China.

The University currently offers approximately 90 degree programmes in the fields of science, engineering, business, finance, architecture, urban planning, language, culture and all are taught in English except for general and basic courses. Undergraduate students earn two degrees: an XJTLU degree from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a globally recognised degree from the University of Liverpool. Postgraduate students receive a University of Liverpool degree that is recognised by the Ministry of Education. All academic departments at XJTLU offer PhD opportunities, which help to fulfill XJTLU’s vision of “becoming a research-led international university in China and a Chinese university recognised internationally for its unique features”.

Located in Suzhou, a city that has been known in China as ‘paradise on the earth’ since ancient times, XJTLU enjoys a beautiful environment where there is a harmonious coexistence between the city’s rich cultural traditions and its rapid economic development. Suzhou is one of the most developed cities in China. Why Us

XJTLU will orientate itself towards applied research, aiming to enhance Suzhou Industrial Park’s research infrastructure and gain crucial support from local government. The University is also well positioned as a bridge for Sino-British research collaboration, serving both as a portal for research talents entering China and a showcase for local research potential to the world at large.

- Education

The University will continue to enhance its undergraduate education excellence, through rigorous teaching quality assurance, new frameworks for undergraduate teaching, enhanced curriculum and wider base of education and options for the students. In addition, the University will fully implement the Syntegrative Education, and prioritize the postgraduate education (especially PhD education).

- Research

The University will accelerate the pace to build an internationally-recognised reputation for research excellence, by boosting the development of university research platforms, appointing increased numbers of professors as leaders of research excellence, and exploring effective research incentives, in order to achieve XJTLU’s aspiration to become a research-led university.

- Social Services & Regional Impact

The University has established itself as a key stakeholder and contributor of the region (Suzhou Industrial Park, Suzhou City and beyond), and will continue to strengthen its collaborations with all sectors of the society to build up new communities featuring sharing and symbiosis, by further developing the Think Tank and the Innovation Platforms (International Innovation Hub & the International Technology Transfer Centre).

- Influence on Higher Education

As stated in its mission, the University will continue to impact the higher education sector and drive the exploration for new models, with the support of the Ministry of Education. The work for AY2019/20 will focus on sharing the best practices of XJTLU, collaborating with other institutions and driving the behaviour changes of the higher education participants.
