BJTU takes strengthening scientific and technological innovation as a strategic focus of development and constantly improves the capacity of social service. BJTU boasts 59 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms, including 1 National Key Laboratory, 1 National Engineering Research Centre, 6 National Engineering Laboratories, 1 National Energy Research Centre, 1 National Global technological Cooperation Base, 1 Collaborative Innovation Centre of Rail Transit Safety, 4 National Accredited Laboratories, 1 National University Science and Technology Park, 9 Key Laboratories of Ministry of Education/ Engineering Research Centre, 2 Beijing municipal laboratories, 17 Beijing Key Laboratories/Engineering Technology Research Centres, 1 first group of Capital High-end Think Tank, 4 Beijing Municipal Philosophy and Social Sciences Research bases, 2 Key Laboratories of Industry of Traffic and Transportation as well as 8 other research platforms on provincial and ministerial levels. In recent five years, BJTU has undertaken more than 10,000 scientific research projects of “National 973 Plan”, “National 863 Plan”, National Key Research and Development Plan, National Key Project of Social Sciences Fund, and National Science Fund with a total research funds of 3.8 billion RMB. BJTU has published 4,246 papers in SCIE publications, 6,780 papers in EI publications and 2,420 papers in ISTP publications. There are 2,385 patent applications and 1,343 approvals. BJTU has created academic exchange brands of “High-level Forum of China’s Transportation” and “BJTU Grand Lecture”, hosted and undertaken over 50 high-level international academic conferences. BJTU has won 11 national awards, and 154 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards, including 2 projects winning First and Second Prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 2 projects winning Second Prizes in the State Technological Invention Award. 4 research projects have won the Second Prize of the Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement of Higher Learning Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences). BJTU has teaching, research instruments and equipment asset of 1.28 billion RMB, 10.07 million paper, electronic and website books in library and set up a database with the characteristics of traffic and transportation.
The university regards strengthening cooperation and exchanges as an important way to upgrade the level of running school and enhance its influences at home and abroad. BJTU has established cooperative relations with 235 universities and famous multi-national enterprises from 45 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France in order to cultivate first-class talents with global vision. The university has established Confucius Institutes at Group T of KU Leuven in Belgium, Texas Southern University in the United States and University of Campinas in Brazil. In 2017, BJTU officially joined the OSJD to enhance the influence and voice in the field of international railway; joined the Association of Chinese and Central and Eastern European Universities to lay foundations for the educational exchange and cooperation between BJTU and Central and Eastern countries; hosted the Belt and Road Rail Transit Education and Training School-Enterprise Cooperation Dialogue: Annual Meeting of the China-ASEAN Rail Transit Education and Training Association; and signed cooperation agreements with Russian University of Transport and Bandung Institute of Technology to jointly establish the Jeme Tien Yow Institute and China-Indonesia High-speed Railway Research Centre, respectively. The International Culture Festival is held every two years to promote international academic and cultural exchanges. BJTU boasts 1 “National Demonstration College”, 5 “Overseas Expertise Introduction Centre for Discipline Innovation” (111 Centre), 1 Nurturing Project of 111 Centre, 1 “Belt and Road” Expertise Introduction Project for Education, Science, Culture and Health, 17 experts selected into the “High-end Foreign Experts Project”, 4 experts selected into the “National One-Thousand Talent Plan (International)” (3 for long-term and 1 for short-term), 6 Chinese-foreign Cooperative Education projects, 2 cross-border educational institutes to carry out degree education at both undergraduate and graduate levels and improve the school-running level in internationalisation. BJTU makes full use of the roles of the Alumni, Foundation and Board of Directors and deepens collaborative innovation among the government, the industry, the academia, research institutes and users. So far, BJTU has established 49 local alumni associations at home and abroad, absorbed 83 board members and established strategic cooperative relationship with enterprises of transportation, logistics, information, energy and other industries as well as local governments, which has realised long-term and extensive cooperation in personnel training and scientific research.
